EDITORIAL

Pushing the frontiers of endocrinology and metabolism: a new Perspectives series

Amira Klip, Editor-in-Chief

American Journal of Physiology—
Endocrinology and Metabolism

August 2007, Volume 293 (56).

Where does your field stand? What are the main questions? What are the main controversies? Roadblocks? What are the implications toward our broader understanding of physiology and health?

Individual articles do not allow us to answer all of those questions at once. Comprehensive or focused reviews are very useful resources, but the detail may deter the personal analysis. The richness of science has always been the filter that the individual gives to knowledge. Hence, we think it is important to highlight specific areas or questions in research through the expert eyes and minds of specialists.

The American Journal of Physiology — Endocrinology and Metabolism will use the above questions to showcase areas of research that are highly represented by the Journal's submissions and published articles. As each Associate Editor for the Journal works on areas of ample interest to our readership, I thought it appropriate to ask each of them to describe their own research area under the above magnifying glass. This will also allow our wide readership to get to know the Editors better. We will approach this initiative through a new series of Perspectives articles, titled Frontiers.

The Frontiers series aims to provide a concise, cutting-edge analysis of a field or a research question. Although the Associate Editors will kick-start the series, we are also beginning to line up invitations to leaders in diverse areas to provide us with an insightful analysis of their field.

I invite you to read our upcoming series of Frontiers in the American Journal of Physiology — Endocrinology and Metabolism and to follow the thread of what we hope will be incisive, useful resources in our fields of study.
